![]() The field of RNA interference or RNAi has received considerable attention since the phenomenon was recognized by Science Magazine as the "Breakthrough of the Year" in 2002. The mechanism of RNAi is believed to expand the universe of potential drug targets and also offer a new approach for known disease targets that have proven difficult to combat with more conventional therapeutic approaches and technologies.
Nucleonics, Inc, founded in 2001, is a privately held, emerging, biotechnology company focused on the development of novel RNAi therapeutics for viral and other diseases with high unmet clinical need. The company believes its proprietary technology and delivery systems for expressed interfering RNA (eiRNA) offer advantages over other RNAi approaches in terms of safety and efficacy that position Nucleonics as a leader within the emerging field of RNAi. The company is initially focusing its efforts on the development of eiRNA-based therapeutics for chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) infections. Nucleonics has also initiated early preclinical programs for pandemic flu, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer.
The company plans to develop its clinical candidate products through Phase II clinical trials and then partner its programs with larger pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies to support Phase III pivotal trials and subsequent product launch.
The company is also interested in working with research institutions and other biotechnology or pharmaceutical firms with strong foundations in other therapeutic areas or disease targets to co-develop novel eiRNA therapeutics for other indications.
