Mr. Towarnicki joined Nucleonics as President & CEO in 2003. At that time he was also named a member of the board of directors. Prior to Nucleonics, Mr. Towarnicki served as Chairman, President & CEO of Cell Pathways, Inc., an emerging pharmaceutical company with two drugs in the clinic and one in-licensed commercial product. Cell Pathways was acquired by OSI Pharmaceuticals in June 2003. During his six-year tenure, Mr. Towarnicki led the expansion of Cell Pathways from a virtual organization to a fully integrated, NASDAQ listed, emerging pharmaceutical company. Prior to joining Cell Pathways, Mr. Towarnicki led the development of Integra LifeSciences Corporation. During his five years as President & COO, he built Integra LifeSciences from a 12 person R&D organization into a fully integrated medical device company trading on the NASDAQ. Experience prior to Integra LifeSciences includes: General Manager of Focus Technologies, a privately held esoteric disease reference laboratory; VP of Development and Operations for Collagen Corporation; Operations Manager for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and, ten years of increasing management responsibility in operations for Merck & Co. In 2005, Mr. Towarnicki was named to the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) Emerging Companies Section Governing Body. Mr. Towarnicki earned both a B.S. and M.S. in Biology from Villanova University.
Michael D. Young, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President
Dr. Young joined Nucleonics as Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President in March 2008 after two years supporting Nucleonics as a clinical and regulatory consultant. Dr. Young brings more than 30 years of experience in the field of clinical research and pharmaceutical development. He has personally managed the development and submission of marketing applications for over a dozen new products as well as numerous supplemental applications. Most relevant to Nucleonics’ programs, is Dr. Young’s senior leadership role in the clinical development of Engerix-B, GlaxoSmithKline’s hepatitis B vaccine. Prior to Nucleonics, Dr. Young was Founder, President and Managing Consultant of MDY-Associates, a group of independent experts who provided specific strategic and technical input as well as general management support to health care endeavors at critical points in their development. Dr. Young spent 27 years within the pharmaceutical industry. During this period he held senior clinical, regulatory and scientific positions at such leading health care companies as Medeva PLC (Development Director – Chief Scientific Officer), The Proctor & Gamble Company (Corporate Director, Worldwide Regulatory and Clinical Development), SmithKline and French Laboratories, now part of GlaxoSmithKline (Vice President, Worldwide Regulatory Affairs and U.S. Clinical Development), and Astra Pharmaceuticals (Vice President, Scientific Affairs).
Dr. Young presently serves on the board of directors of SuperGen Inc. He has also served on the board of directors for Xenova Group PLC., KS Biomedix PLC, and the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers Association.
Dr. Young holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wales, an M.D. degree from the Welsh National School of Medicine, and an MBA from Columbia University School of Business.
Richard Fitzgerald, C.P.A., Vice President, & Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Fitzgerald, joined Nucleonics in 2002. He has 21 years of progressive financial and commercial experience supporting large established companies as well as development stage enterprises. Prior to Nucleonics Mr. Fitzgerald served as the Director of Corporate Development for Exelon Corporation (formerly PECO Energy) where his experiences included business development, mergers, strategic joint ventures and acquisitions, business valuation, and financial and strategic planning. While at PECO/Exelon, Mr. Fitzgerald led efforts to establish and finance joint ventures within the telecommunications field and execute strategic mergers and acquisitions within the energy sector. Earlier in his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers he provided financial and accounting advisory services to pharmaceutical and medical device companies, software developers, and various venture capital-backed entities in high technology fields. As a member of PricewaterhouseCoopers' National High Technology Practice, Mr. Fitzgerald supported several clients through venture capital financings and initial public offerings. Mr. Fitzgerald earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Accounting from Bucknell University. He is a member of the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Public Accounting and he is also a founding member of the Bucknell University Business Advisory Board.
Annette Richter, Esq., Vice President, Intellectual Property
Ms. Richter joined Nucleonics in 2004. She had supported the company as a consultant from 2001-2004, working to build Nucleonics' intellectual property estate. From 1992-1998, she served as Patent Counsel for Apollon, Inc., Malvern, Pennsylvania. After Wyeth acquired Apollon in 1998, she continued in that capacity as a consultant through 2000. Earlier in her career, she served as Associate Patent Counsel at Centocor, Malvern, Pennsylvania and as a Counsel in the Patent Department at E. I. du Pont de Nemours in Wilmington, Delaware. After graduating from law school, she served for one year as a law clerk for the Honorable Walter K. Stapleton, then US District Judge for the District of Delaware. Earlier work experience included six years as Associate Director, Medical Communications, Wyeth Laboratories, Radnor, PA, where she was responsible for regulatory compliance of prescription drug advertising and adverse experience reporting, and five years at the University of Wisconsin, School of Pharmacy as an Assistant to the Dean and Clinical Pharmacy Instructor. Ms. Richter earned a B.S. (Highest Honors) in Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin and a J.D. (Magna cum Laude) from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar and a Registered Patent Attorney, as well as a Registered Pharmacist in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
